WINGATE — Against Central Mountain last week, Bellefonte running back C.J. Funk commenced the second half with a 77-yard touchdown run. He did the same thing last night against Tyrone with a 61-yard touchdown on the half’s first play.

“I credit that all to the line,” Funk said. “I’m not a superstar, but these guys up front work extremely hard all week. Tyrone’s a physical team, so for my line to dominate up front so I could do my thing is just absolutely incredible.”

Funk’s score was a momentum swinger. It tied the game at 14 as Bellefonte surged to score 24 unanswered points and drop the undefeated Tyrone Golden Eagles, 31-14.

With the win, Bellefonte reaches the halfway mark of the season with a 5-0 record for the first time since 2009.

C.J. Funk ran for a game-high 183 rushing yards and one score. It was his third consecutive 100-yard rushing game as the junior has nicely filled the shoes left behind by previous tailback Dexter Gallishaw.

“I think he’s a dynamic player,” Bellefonte coach Shanon Manning said of Funk. “What I’m most proud of with CJ is that he’s taking a lot of pride with trying to be a powerful kid and a powerful running back.”

Tyrone’s hot start failed to carry into the second half. They took an early 7-0 lead after Denver Light connected with Tommy Hicks for an 11-yard touchdown on a 4th and 9 conversion.

Bellefonte bounced back in the second quarter. Wide receiver Trae Bauman flew past the secondary on a corner route, and hauled in a 25-yard touchdown reception from Kyle Myers to even the game with 11:48 renaming in the period.

Midway through the second quarter, Bellefonte had another 4th down collapse. Facing a 4th and 1, Tyrone running back Zac Albright bust through the defense for a 37-yard score to extend Tyrone’s lead, 14-7.

Bellefonte coach Shanon Manning said the defense was out-worked on the two busted 4th down conversions.

“They out-executed us both times,” Manning said of the defensive lapses. “[On the pass play], Tommy Hicks made a tremendous catch and the ball could’ve went either way. [And on the run], Zac Albright did a nice job and bounced it outside. But that’s all apart of the game, sometimes you out-execute them, and they out-execute you.”

The Raiders trailed 14-7 at halftime. In the locker room, Manning said the coaching staff kept it simple. They made no major adjustments and preached the importance of noticing the details. And the discussion paid off, Bellefonte came out re-energzied and scored 24 unanswered points in the second half.

C.J. Funk tied the game early with a 61-yard touchdown run on the half’s first play.

Later in the 4th, Kyle Myers connected with Noah Badger, who broke a defender’s tackle and powered through for an 11-yard score to extend Bellefonte’s lead, 21-14, with 10:08 remaining.

Kyle Myers soon ran for a 2-yard touchdown run to extend Bellefonte’s lead to 28-14.

Myers was clutch on defense, too. On the ensuing possession following his touchdown run, he intercepted Tyrone quarterback Denver Light. The pick set up a 26-yard field goal by Chris Persiko to seal the game for the Raiders, 31-14.

Myers finished the game with 61 passing yards and one touchdown. On the ground, he added another 69-yards and one score.

Bellefonte dropped an unbeaten team with Tyrone, and they’ll be looking to repeat next week against undefeated Clearfield. The Bison rolled through the Central Mountain Wildcats, 49-7, on Friday.

“They have a lot of talented skill players and they’re pretty good up front,” Funk said. “We’re going to have to work real hard this week, even more than we did last week, and get after it this week.”
