Zach Simpson has one more year of college eligibility remaining at Penn State, but the Hollidaysburg Area High School product apparently is forgoing his senior season and will play his final home game Saturday against Maryland.
Penn State will recognize its seniors and other underclassmen playing their final home game prior to the contest against Maryland. Simpson’s name was listed in PSU’s game notes Monday as one of 21 players who will be recognized.
Simpson, the backup center and a mainstay on special teams, came to PSU in 2015 as a preferred walk-on and redshirted his first season.
He appeared in 12 games in 2016, mostly on kickoff return. He played in all 13 games last year, several on offense, including in the Fiesta Bowl against Washington. He has appeared in nine games this year, including a few on offense.
Simpson has remained a walk-on and never received a scholarship, despite getting a good bit of playing time during his career. He is majoring in economics.
