WINGATE – For three and a half quarters, the Bald Eagle Area boys basketball team seemed to be holding off a very stubborn Penns Valley team, 32-31.
However, in the final four minutes the Rams’ sharpshooter Logan Snyder posted seven points in the period to lead Penns Valley to a 22-point fourth quarter to take home the 44-34 victory Friday night at the Bald Eagle gym.
Bald Eagle Area got a 12-point effort from Drew Bucha and Luke Wilson.
Penns Valley was led by Snyder’s 19-point effort.Teammates Cam Shaffer and Caleb Narber chipped in with eight points apiece.
“This has been the story of our season. We put ourselves in position to win a game and then we find a way to lose. It’s very frustrating,” said Bald Eagle Area coach Bill Butterworth. “These kids deserve to win a game. They play hard but they have to finish. They play so hard and I know it’s only going to take one win to get them back on track.”
The Eagles led off the first period posting a 11-7 advantage.
Things continued to go well early for the Eagles as they held Penns Valley to six while its offense posted seven.
At the half, BEA held a 18-13 lead.
Both teams posted nine each in the third setting up the drama in the final stanza.
Going into the final stanza, the Eagles led 27-22.
Narber brought the Rams to within three as he opened the period with a jumper.
Bald Eagle pushed things back to five as he hit a tough shot in traffic, upping it to 29-24.
Penns Valley battled back with four consecutive points. On baskets by Shaffer and Narber, the Rams closed the Eagles’ lead to just one point, 29-28 with 6:37 left.
Bucha extended the lead to three as he also hit a bucket underneath.
Tobias squared up and launched a three to put the Rams tied with Bald Eagle at 31 with 5:55 left.
Nick Maynard gave the Eagles back the lead as he hit 1-of-2 from the charity stripe.
But Penns Valley started to heat up as once again Snyder posted a triple to go up 34-32.
Back came Bald Eagle as they tied it again with two free throws by Bucha.
Unfortunately for Bald Eagle, the Rams ended the game by going on a 10-0 run to end the contest.
