Central Mountain sends trio of wrestlers to semifinals at Regionals

ALTOONA- The Central Mountain Wildcats had a productive Day 1 of the Northwest Regional Tournament.They advanced three wrestlers to Saturday’s semifinals, while another seven will compete in the day’s consolation round.

Seniors Jake Edwards (heavyweight), Johnny Shreffler (120 pounds) and freshman Taylor Weaver (113 pounds) were Central Mountain’s three advancers of the day.

Weaver (24-7) secured his semifinal bid after posting two falls in the evening. In the opening round he pinned Shikellamy’s Damian Wolfe before returning to pin Selinsgrove’s Aiden Gaugler in the second round. Weaver will face Meadville’s Vincent Rinella in Saturday’s semifinals.

Johnny Shreffler (24-8) also posted a pair of falls on the day. He pinned Obama Academy’s Robert Danials before dropping Williamsport’s Riley Bower via second-round pin. Shreffler will face Bellefonte’s Lane Aikey (30-8) on Saturday.

Jake Edwards (25-7) joined Weaver and Shreffler with a 2-0 performance on Friday. He recorded a first-round pin over Clearfield’s Avery Gisewhite before earning an 11-4 decision over McDowell’s Mark Chambers. Edwards will face Altoona’s Nate Simmers on Saturday.

Wildcats Derek Keen (106), Cody Coleman (138), Lane Porter (145), Alonzo Henry (152) and Tanner Riggle (195) won their first matches of their day before falling in the second round.

Kayden Busey (132),Gage Sutliff (182)and Nikolas Miller (220) lost their opening matches.

Central Mountain sits in third place in the team rankings after Day 1.
