Clinton County (Juniors) suffer season-ending loss to Fairchance
FROM STAFF REPORTS
BERWICK- The Clinton County (Juniors) season came to an end Saturday with a 7-5 loss against Fairchance. Clinton finished the weekend 1-2 and concluded the State Tournament with a fifth-place finish.
“The girls battled the entire time,” Clinton coach Matt Burrows said. “They stayed up, they were positive and if we could’ve put across another run or two we [may have won the game].”
Clinton trailed 2-0 before exploding for five runs in the fourth. Madison Hardy roped a two-run double, before Adalynn McKeague supplied an RBI single. Julia Schubach delivered a two-run double as Clinton stretched its lead, 5-2.
“In that inning we really put pressure on their defense,” Clinton coach Matt Burrows said of the scoring. “We were more selective at the plate and our girls got solid base hits. We were feeling pretty good then.”
Down 5-2, Fairchance responded swiftly. They smacked a leadoff home run in the bottom of the fourth to slash Clinton’s lead, 5-3. They added another run in the fourth, before regaining the lead in the fifth.
“There were a couple miscues that we had, which resulted in additional runs for Fairchance,” Burrows said. “And ultimately they prevailed.”
Clinton failed to manufacture a run after loading the bases with two outs in the fifth. They gained another base runner in the sixth, but were unable to send her home.
Adalynn McKeague went six innings on the mound. She struckout four batters while scattering six hits and three earned runs.
On the offensive side Clinton finished with eight hits.
Clinton’s season ended with a District and Sectionals Championship, plus a trip to the State tournament. For their success this summer the athletes were recognized at Sunday’s 8-10 year old Sectional Championship between Clinton County and Mifflinburg.
“I think moving forward the Clinton Little League program is in good hands,” Burrows said. “There’s some really talented young girls coming up.”
Burrows routinely praises his team, and this time he also expressed kind words for his assistant coaches, and the athletes’ parents who supported his squad throughout the season.
“I can’t say enough about the efforts from the other coaches, Scott Weaver and Emily Strouse, who were both fantastic,” Burrows said. “And then we just had parents who helped during practice every day. There were so many people involved in helping the girls.”
