LOCK HAVEN — Over 40 families partipated in the “Family Literacy Projects” at Dickey Elementary School lthis year.

This is the second year for the projects, which start with students selecting a favorite book to read with their family.

After the book is completed, the students and their family are encouraged to create a display board about the book and bring them to school for all students and faculty to see.

“Last year, my kids chose the same book and we worked on our display together,” said Dickey parent Ashley Brungard. “This year, they each chose their own book, so we had two displays to work on,” she continued. “But they love it. We have alot of fun creating unique displays that capture their interpretation of the books we read.”

The district Title 1 program sponsors the project.

“We are so proud of the students,” said Lesley Skritch, Dickey Title 1 teacher.

“The program continues to grow and the students in the building love looking at all of the displays. It’s a great way to encourage families to read and create together,” Skritch said.

All the students who participated received an award certificate titled “Title1 Family Literacy Celebration.” The awards were given for working as a family to share a favorite book and were signed by Dickey Elementary Title 1 teachers.
