Mark your calendars that Howard Area Lions Food Bank dates in September have been changed because of the Labor Day holiday. Distribution will be on Sept. 10 for Centre County residents and Sept. 17 for Beech Creek area residents. Food bank hours are from 2-4 p.m. at the former Beech Creek Elementary School.

Lions Bingo will be starting up again on Sept. 20 at the Beech Creek Fire Company social hall. The Lions Club took the summer months off from having the bingo but will be beginning again this month. Bingo is usually held the second and fourth Thursday evenings of the month, but this month it is different because of the set-up and preparations for the fire company’s gun drawing at the fire hall.

Lions Bingo will also be held on Sept. 27. Doors and the kitchen open at 5 p.m. with games beginning at 6:30.


Advent Church and Historial Museum will hold their fall yard and bake sale on Sept. 14 from 9-5 and on Sept. 15 from 9-noon. Donations of good, clean and working yard sale items can be dropped off at the big tent that has been set up at the church now through Sept. 12. Baked goods can be dropped off the on Thursday evening.

Advent Church and Historical Museum is located at 1303 Moose Run Road, about three miles Northwest of Milesburg on the road heading to Yarnell.

Volunteers are needed to sort and organize the donated items on Thursday, Sept. 13 during the day and into the evening hours for those who can come after their work. Volunteers are also needed to help on the sale days and for clean-up on Saturday afternoon.

Town-wide Yard Sale Days will be held in Madisonburg on Sept. 6, 7 and 8.

The last Pop-up Market of the summer is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 8, from 10 to 3 in Beech Creek. Vendors will be set up in the Friendship Community Center and at Queen Bee Collectibles. Craft vendors are needed and information can be obtained by calling Melissa at 717-386-9669 or by email at Food and refreshments will be available for purchase at the FCC during the market, too.

Fairview Cemetery Association will host a Chicken BBQ and bake sale on Sept. 8 from 11-1 at the Yarnell Community Center. Tickets have been pre-sold for the event but donations of baked goods are still needed. Baked goods can be dropped off at the YCC before 11 o’clock on Sept. 8. Nittany Antique Machinery Show will be held at Penns Cave in Centre Hall on September 6-9. Vendors will have their foods and wares available Wednesday thru Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

.Walker Township Fire Company of Hublersburg will hold a gun raffle at the fire station on Sept. 8 from 3-9 p.m. Tickets are $10 each. Food and beverages available and DJ Jake Heverly will provide entertainment.

The West Branch Area Ladies Retreat will be held at Sylvan Hills Christian Service Camp on Sept. 14 and 15. Kristy Steppe will be speaking on “Strong Women in the Bible – Their Strengths and Priorities.” The topic will help women of all ages to develop a heart of wisdom. The cost is $25 for both days of the retreat or $20 for just one day of attendance. Overnight accommodations are also available at the camp. Beech Creek-Blanchard Fire Company will hold a gun and ATV drawing on Sept. 15 at the fire hall from noon to 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 each. Prizes include guns, bows and cash. The grand prize is a 2018 Honda TRX420 ATV with trailer. Food and beverages will be provided. Must be 21 with a valid photo ID to attend.

Howard Fire Company will be holding a Chicken BBQ on Sept. 16 at the fire station. The chicken should be ready to eat at 11:30 a.m. A meal of chicken, macaroni salad, baked beans and a roll will be $8.

The Coy Lutz Memorial Rodeo will be held on Sept. 21 and 22 at Grange Fairgrounds. Tickets are available on Facebook or by contacting the Lutz family. The rodeo begins each evening at 7:30 p.m.

Nittany Valley Amish Benefit Dinner will be held at the Hublersburg fire hall on Saturday, Sept. 22 from noon to 7 p.m. You can pick your time to eat and enjoy the excellent foods provided by the local Amish community. To reserve your meal time slot or for questions call Katie at 814-383-2008.

The third annual Sisters Against Cancer/No One Fights Alone 5k Run/Walk will be held in Howard on Oct. 6. The event will draw awareness to the BRCA gene and raise funds to help others in memory of four sisters who fought long battles against cancer. Faye Garis, Mary Lomison, Darlene Boone and Dottie Butts all carried the BRCA2 hereditary cancer gene that causes higher risks of breast and ovarian cancers. Their families have joined together to support others in the Centre and Clinton County areas who may be going through the same situation.
