JS student plans bingo to benefit Operation Christmas Program

AVIS — Lauren Summerson, a junior at Jersey Shore Senior High School, will host variety bingo at the Avis Fire Hall on Sunday, Sept. 23, as her graduation project… and for a good cause.

All money raised at the event will be donated to the Pine Creek Township Police Department’s Operation Christmas Program.

Operation Christmas Program was started by Police Chief David Winkleman several years ago with the goal of helping families in need fulfill their children’s wish lists.

This isn’t the first year Lauren has helped with the program.

Last year, she and her family helped wrap gifts, and she plans to do it again this year.

The decision to choose this program for her senior project wasn’t a difficult one.

When it was time to pick a charity she and her mother sat down and began tossing around ideas. They decided on Operation Christmas Program. Both Lauren and her mother, Denise, grew up in Avis and they still live there.

“I wanted to give back to the community,” Lauren said.

Since last December, Lauren has been working on her project, going from business to business asking for donations as bingo prizes. She didn’t do it all by herself, however.

“I’m not alone in getting these donations,” she said. Her mom, dad, grandmother, aunt and uncle have all been a big help in organizing the event.

Variety bingo will begin at 1 p.m. with doors opening at 11:30 a.m.

There will also be 50/50 raffle tickets sold at the door, and food and drinks will be available for purchase, with all proceeds going toward Operation Christmas Program.

Tickets cost $20 in advance and $25 at the door, and a total of 20 games will be played with three special ones at the end.

Denise said there are some very special prizes for the last three bingo games.

“There’s some pretty neat stuff. We’ve gotten a really good response from businesses,” she said.

Anyone who wishes to purchase a ticket can stop by Cheri Aungst Notary Office, 24 Central Ave., Avis, or call Denise at 570-367-0797.

Also those who wish to apply for Operation Christmas Program can contact the Pine Creek Township Police Department at 570-753-5672. Those eligible must live in Avis Borough, Pine Creek, Wayne or Dunnstable townships.
