Poppy Days participants receive certificates

PHOTO PROVIDED

Members of Lock Haven Post #131’s American Legion Family, who participated in Poppy Days, are shown with their Poppy Certificates recognizing them for participation in the event. The certificates were presented at the Sept. 18 meeting by Poppy chairman Carol Wert Walker. Pictured are, from left, seated, Janice Pease, Carol Wert Walker, Jane Stroup, Doris Schenck and Shelly Allen; second row, Ralph and Linda Womeldorf, Bonnie Bair, Denise Haight and Sharon Coleman; back row, Barbara Duck, Peggy Tressler, Althea Watkins and Kimberly Schmidt. Missing from photo were Kenny Pease, Maranda Hanley and Caleb Hockenberry. The local legion held Poppy Days in May. Poppy Days is a tradition that dates back to the American Legion Auxiliary’s first National Convention in the early 1920s, when the red poppy was adopted as the American Legion Family’s memorial flower. Today, it remains an iconic symbol of honor for the sacrifice of our veterans. ALA members distribute millions of poppies annually across the country in exchange for donations, that go directly to assist veterans in our communities.
