MH Cub Scouts enjoy Pinewood Derby

MILL HALL — It was an exciting time for Cub Scout Pack 54 at the annual Pinewood Derby at Mill Hall Fire Hall on Feb. 2.

Scouts and their families arrived for weigh-in, nervously anticipating their official car weight, which cannot exceed 5 ounces. After weigh-in, families enjoyed a potluck-style lunch.

The race began at 12:30, beginning with Lions Ava Berry, Colten Miller, and Shayla Clouse. Aliyah Confer and Brayden Berry competed next for the Tigers. Alexander Bechdel, Dimitri Bechdel and Thompson Bechdel battled in the Wolf with Owen Welch, who is the sole Bear scout. Webelo scout, James Turner had the fastest derby car. Arrow of Light scouts Benjamin Parker and Remington Ripka raced last.

Contests were followed by an open race for siblings, and a loop was added to the track for extra excitement.

Winners from each age group’s contest –Colten Miller, Brayden Berry, Alexander Bechdel, Owen Welch, James Turner, and Benjamin Parker — will continue on to Linda Philbin Memorial Bald Eagle District Pinewood Derby on March 2 in Williamsport.

Pack 54 meets every Tuesday from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Beech Creek Friendship Community Center. Enrollment is always open for boys and girls in kindergarten through 5th grade.
