Sugar Valley plans ‘Good Old Days’ celebration

LOGANTON — The Sugar Valley Historical Society will hold its 21st Annual “Good Old Days” celebration at the Booneville Campground,, 349 Campground Rd., Loganton, on Saturday, May 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This year, the celebration has expanded its offering of demonstrations, displays, educational presentations and old timey events for visitors of all ages.

Demonstrations will include basket weaving, wood beam hewing, maple syrup production, muzzle loader building, spinning, weaving, tatting, quilting, chain saw carving, firewood cutting and soap making.

Educational programs and displays will include beekeeping, trapping, Native American history and flute display, old farm tools, tractors and antique and classic cars. Other participants will be the Sugar Valley Community Volunteer Fire Company and the Clinton County Genealogical Society.

A civil war theme will include author Brian E. Stamm of Bellefonte. Stamm will have signed copies of his book “Exploding Bullets in the American Civil War,” and a small display of Civil War period fishing items as well as a Gardiner exploding bullet.

PHOTO PROVIDED Steve Weaver will interpret Eastern Woodland Native Americans and their life for visitors of the Sugar Valley Historical Society’s “Good Old Days” celebration. He will also speak about Chief James Logan and Logan’s trail. His brother, Hal Weaver, will display and play Native American style flutes that he crafts.

In addition, an encampment of 125th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment and Hampton’s Battery F reenactors will be set up on the grounds, and Civil War surgical instruments will be displayed.

Children’s activities will be a petting zoo hosted by Clinton County 4-H groups, and instruction in making corn husk dolls.

Scheduled programs include:

∫ Music and sing along by The Twisted Racquet-Tears at 10:30 -11:30 a.m. and 1:30 -2:30 p.m.

∫ A presentation on the 1918 Loganton Fire by Dr. Charles Sweeny at 1 p.m.

∫ A tractor slow race at 2:30 p.m.

∫ A food concession, books, T-shirts and Sugar Valley Historical Society memberships benefitting the society will be available.
