Old Photo Album: Familiar faces at The Express
PHOTOS PROVIDED
Many in the Lock Haven and Clinton County area may have heard of the two people pictured at left is past Express Publisher Frank D. O’Reilly Jr. O’Reilly was a staple in the community for decades during the early 1900s. O’Reilly mentored and trained his successor, Charlie Ryan, after he worked his way up through ranks at The Express. A large portion of Route 220 in the Clinton County area, beginning in Avis and stretching to Interstate 80 was named after O’Reilly in his memory. At right is Rebecca Gross. Gross paved the way for many female journalists in the United States after becoming one of the first female editors in 1931. Gross would continue to serve as managing editor for The Express until her retirement in 1970. Both photos were taken while O’Reilly and Gross were hard at work in 1939.
