BELLEFONTE — Welcome adults, parents and kids of all ages!

The Bellefonte Art Museum for Centre County is expanding their Lego creative activities with an online Lego Gallery called a “Block Party.”

It’s no surprise that many online Lego retailers are sold out. With many of us finding some extra time, it’s an especially good opportunity to get out your Lego bricks and start creating.

Here’s how it works:

— Create an original work with your Legos or produce a model from one of the amazing Lego kits.

— Take a photo of it and email the photo to bellefontemuseum@gmail.com. Museum staff will download the photo and show it online in the new Block Party Gallery.

We would like to identify the creator so send us your name and, if you wish, please send along a photo of you making the creation. It’s even more exciting to see the creator in action. This is another opportunity to be inspired, so share your creation with us and we can share your work with our community and more!

Enriched with thousands of Legos, before the pandemic, the museum was about to open their renovated Lego space. So that is another thing to look forward to when they reopen to the public.

The Lego room now has shelves in window alcoves where they will display works created in the Lego room. Be inspired and create things, places, even explore the world with Legos.

Simple, block shaped toys have been around for hundreds of years. The building bricks we know as Legos today were first created by a Danish man named Ole Kirk Christiansen in 1932. He and his son opened a small shop which over the years evolved into creating the plastic interlocking brick we know today.

Lego creations have been recognized as art and several galleries have mounted Lego exhibitions showing both Lego sculptures and paintings and prints of Lego creations.

Creating with Legos is fun and enhances memory and learning. It is thought that working with Legos improves problem solving, organization skills, motor development, creativity and critical thinking. So just do it!
