Howard Happenings

Thank you to Ella Pagano of Howard for bringing our office some decorated sugar cookies. What a delightful treat and we appreciate Ella’s kindness.

Howard Fire Company’s Punkin Chunkin has been canceled for Oct. 17 because of the COVID-19 outdoor gathering restrictions at Bald Eagle State Park.

Country Music Jam at the Howard Fire Hall that is usually held the fourth Sunday afternoon of the month has been canceled for Oct. 25. Call Connie at 625-2724 for info on the Back Porch String Band.

Due to COVID-19 the annual Halloween Parade in Howard will not be held this year but Trick or Treating will be observed in Howard Borough on Saturday, Oct. 31, from 6-8 p.m. Call Anita at 814-571-4160 for Howard Halloween info.

The Monument Festival Committee regretfully must cancel the Haunted Halloween Hayride that is scheduled for Oct. 31. The Christmas Tree Lighting in December will also be canceled. These cancellations are both due to COVID-19 gathering. Anyone having any questions about the activities that are held in Monument may contact Roger or Mona at 570-962-2443.

White Cane Days were held on Oct. 9 and 10 when Howard Area Lions Club collected monetary donations to benefit the blind. The total collected was $1,000, the most ever received for the White Cane collections that our local Lions have participated in.

Lion Jim Packer coordinated the collection event outside First Commonwealth Bank, Lyken’s Market and the UniMart in Beech Creek. Thanks to all of the Lions who worked in shifts throughout the event manning the collection cans.

Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Roger “Curly” Bechdel who passed away on Sept. 30. Curly was active in the Howard Area Lions Club and could always be found selling 50/50 raffle tickets at the Sweetheart Dinners and Lions Bingo.

Howard Area Lions Food Bank dates will be on Oct. 19 for those residents living in the Beech Creek area of Clinton County and residents in Centre County who missed their distribution earlier this month. Drive thru distribution is from noon to 3 p.m. You should stay in your vehicle and wear a mask when approached by a food bank worker. Bring your empty box back each month for the Lions Club to refill and use on future distribution dates.

Make plans to purchase a Lions Lottery Calendar for the 2021 year from any Lions member. I’m sure there will be some available during food bank dates for you to ask about and purchase there. The calendars are just $10 each and is a fundraiser that the Lions Club uses to help those in need.

Volunteers are needed for the 2020 Toys for Tots Wrapping Schedule at the Penn Stater Conference Center for dates in November. Contact Brenda at 814-355-6816 for more info.

Volunteers are also needed at Centre Peace on the Benner Pike for the positions of cashier, sorting and pricing items, and office support of answering the phone and handling some paperwork. Contact the Centre Peace store at 814-353-9081 or call Cathy directly at 814-404-8097.
