HOWARD AREA LIONS

Howard Area Lions Food Bank’s next distribution date will be on Monday, Jan. 18, for residents who live in the Beech Creek area of Clinton County and those residents of Centre County who missed their distribution date earlier this month. Food bank hours are from noon to 3 p.m. and those coming should stay in your vehicle and wear a mask. Please be sure to bring your empty boxes back each month so that they can be refilled for the next distribution.

The Lions Club is still looking for someone to plow snow as needed at the food bank headquarters. Thanks to Jim Smith for his quick action to clear snow for the Jan. 4 distribution date, but it’s pretty far for Jim to travel so we’re looking for someone closer to consent to plow the next time it snows.

If anyone has any questions about food bank aid offered by the Howard Area Lions or if you can plow snow when needed please contact Lion Ron Davy at 570-962-2407.

AMBULANCE MEMBERSHIP

It’s time to renew your Beech Creek-Blanchard Ambulance membership for another year. Applications were mailed to local residents in the area, but if you didn’t receive one and would like to get a membership you may call the fire station and request an application. Payment and your completed application can be mailed back to the address on the yellow membership application card before Feb. 1.

The cost of an ambulance membership for the year for an individual is $35 and the cost for a couple is $70. A family membership will be $75.

For more information about the ambulance membership or if you might be interested in joining the BC-B Fire Company you may call the fire station at 570-962-2382.

PARKS & REC NEWS

Howard Parks and Rec Committee has sold 110 of their 2021 calendars already and if you would still like one you may contact Debbie Simoncek at 814-625-0054 since she won’t be selling them on Saturdays at the post office now. The calendar pages are of photographs taken by various people in and around Howard. Several photos feature beautiful scenes captured at Bald Eagle State Park. The proceeds from the calendars that sold for $10 each are used to maintain and decorate the parks in town.

There are still a few women’s T-shirts available yet. The T-shirts are an olive green color with the word Howard across the front and cost $10 each. Debbie would like to sell the remaining t-shirts as soon as possible. They’d make great gifts for girls or women who wear a size adult small. If you’d like to see a T-shirt in anticipation of purchasing one please contact Debbie soon.

In 2021 the Howard Parks and Recreation Committee would like to get a more permanent surface for the playground area at Veteran’s Park in town and will be looking at applying for grants to help with the cost of the project.

CEMETERY MEETING

The annual meeting of the Jacksonville Cemetery Association will be held on Saturday, Jan. 23, at 1 p.m. at the Marion Township Municipal Building in Jacksonville. All lot owners and anyone who is interested in the well-being of the association is asked to attend. Those attending should practice social distancing and wear a mask during the meeting.

This meeting is designed to discuss the financial well-being of the cemetery association, to begin planning for the annual festival that’s usually held in July, and to devise a budget for the mowing and upkeep at the cemetery along with other items of interest pertaining to the cemetery association.

Last year the festival was not held because of the pandemic gathering restrictions, but hopefully (depending on the coronavirus protocol) it can be held this summer.

The board members would like to encourage all lot owners and anyone who would like to volunteer to help with the fundraising efforts to attend this annual meeting. Many of the board members have served for years and devoted their time and efforts to the association and they would like to see some new faces become interested in carrying on the association’s work.

Call Joyce at 814-359-0307 for more info about the Jacksonville Cemetery Association.
