Wayne Twp. ice skating rink to open soon

McELHATTAN –The Wayne Township Recreation Committee reports the ice skating rink should soon be ready for ice skaters.

The committee, which met Wednesday, said the weather hasn’t been quite cold enough long enough, but adequate freezing of the ice is expected by next weekend.

During the meeting, the committee named Brian Styers vice chairman. Other officers who remain the same as this year include Jerry Powers, chairman; Jane White, secretary/treasurer and Marion Spong, assistant secretary/treasurer.

The committee also talked about 2021 tentative events and plans, including the opening of the sports court complex and the 225th anniversary event. The sports court complex will include basketball and pickleball courts but will not be completed until warmer weather and the committee obtains the equipment needed for the courts.

White said the committee is hopeful fish will get back into the fish pond located at the township’s Nature Park in April.

For the anniversary celebration, the committee is planning to have the Wayne Township Landfill’s touring bus take residents to different historical places throughout the township and offer some history along the way. Food trucks and a car show throughout the township area also being planned. More details on such events will be forthcoming.

Members present were Powers, White, Spong, Styers, Berger, Jeri Goodbrod and David Calhoun.

The next Wayne Township Recreation Committee meeting will be held Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 6 p.m. at the Wayne Township municipal building.
