HOWARD CALENDARS
Howard Parks and Recreation is again selling items to raise funds to keep the parks in town beautifully maintained during all seasons. The 2025 calendars are available for $10 each. The Christmas ornament for 2024 (fourth in the series) features a really cute gingerbread man. The ornaments are handmade of ceramic and are $10 each. If you missed getting the ornaments from prior years you can still purchase them while supplies last. The committee also has some Howard T-shirts for sale at $20. You can get yours by calling Debbie at 814-625-0054. Local deliveries or pickups in the Howard area can be arranged as well.
YARNELL NEWS
Jack Miller is the rental coordinator for the Yarnell Community Center. Jack now has a new phone number to use in contacting him that you’ll want to have. A great place to hold parties, showers or family gatherings, the former school house building has been nicely updated to a community center, has an open kitchen and counter area and will seat about 100 people. There is a rear entrance that is handi-capped accessible. The cost is $75 per day and can be booked by calling Jack at 814-280-0524.
HOLY MOMENTS
Bald Eagle United Presbyterian Church is again starting their Holy Moments in History series and the public is invited. Mike Palischak, a well-known (retired) history teacher will be enlightening folks on important historical figures that influenced our country in a positive and Godly way.
The first man of interest in the series that begins on Wednesday, Feb. 5, will be William Penn. In case you didn’t already know, William Penn was an English Quaker who founded Pennsylvania. Penn was a strong believer in religious freedom.
The program starts at 10 a.m. and everyone is invited to the comfortable church sanctuary. Each program lasts about 45 minutes or so. Whether you’re just wanting to learn more about historical individuals or a dedicated history buff, you won’t want to miss the four monthly topics in this series that will be held the first Wednesday of each month from February through May.
Palischak welcomes questions and input into each of his chosen topics in the open forums.
The program will take place at the Bald Eagle United Presbyterian Church, 111 Main Street, Mill Hall, Pa. The church is handicap accessible with lots of free parking in our parking lot behind the church.
CLOTHING BANK
Light of the World Clothing Bank will be open today, Jan. 10, and tomorrow, Jan. 11.
Friday’s hours are from 2:30-5 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.
The clothing bank offers clothing in all sizes ranging from newborns to adults. Some bedding, afghans, shoes, purses and more is also available. Everything is free!
The clothing bank is held in the St. John’s United Church of Christ, 145 W. Linn St., Bellefonte. Call the church office at 814-355-9072 for more info.
BALLROOM DANCE
There will be a ballroom dance on Sunday, Jan. 12, at 2 p.m., at Lambert Hall in Bellefonte. Cost is $10/person and bring a snack to share. Call/text 717-543-8348 for more info.
SEAFOOD BUFFET
Sugar Valley Fire Company is having an all-you-can-eat Seafood Buffet on Jan. 11 from 3-6:30 p.m. There will be many seafoods to choose from, including Boom Boom Shrimp, Old Bay Shrimp, deep fried breaded shrimp, lemon pepper and battered fish and scallops. Complimenting the seafood will be mac and cheese, fries, stewed tomatoes, chicken fingers and more! The cost for the fundraiser to benefit the fire company will be $25 for adults and $13 for children. The meal is available for sit down dining or take outs. CEMETERY MEETING
Jacksonville Cemetery’s Annual Meeting will be Jan. 18 at 1 p.m. at the Marion Township Building in Jacksonville. All lot owners and those interested in the wellbeing of the cemetery are invited and encouraged to attend. There are openings for trustees (people need to be willing to step up to serve and help the cemetery move forward). All input and ideas will be appreciated. Call Pam at 814-383-2562 for more info.
SAUSAGE SALE
Faith Chapel UM Church is having a Sausage Sale with orders being taken until Sunday, Jan. 19. Loose sausage, packaged in 5-pound bags will cost $20. (Orders should be in 5-pound increments at $4 per pound). Sausage orders can be picked up at Faith Chapel UM Church on Thursday, Jan. 30 and Friday, Jan. 31, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and on Saturday, Feb. 1, from 9-10 a.m. Call 814-625-2754 to place orders.
AMBULANCE
MEMBERSHIP
It’s time to renew your Beech Creek-Blanchard Ambulance membership for another year. Applications were mailed to local residents in the area, but if you didn’t receive one and would like to get a membership you may drop by the Beech Creek fire station on Jan. 11 to get a membership application. You may drop your completed application and payment off at the fire hall on Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon as well.
The cost of an ambulance membership for the year for an individual is up to $40 now and the cost for a couple is $70. A family membership will now be $80.

BREAKFAST BUFFET
A Breakfast Buffet Benefit for James “Cinders” Munro will be held on Saturday, Jan. 18, at Susquehanna Valley Big Twins Motorcycle Club, 84 Harley Drive, Lock Haven (Woolrich). An all you can eat breakfast will be offered from 7-11 a.m. for $10 adults, $6 for kids ages 6-12; and little tykes eat free. In addition, a 50/50 raffle and Chinese Auction will be held to raise money for Jim.
Jim is a SVBT member who was very seriously injured in an auto accident several months ago in Colorado. He had been hospitalized at specialty care facilities in Wyoming and Utah. Thanks to skilled trauma center care and rehabilitation therapy, Cinders is back home here now, and is now able to walk with a cane, but he still has a ways to go in his healing and recovery process.
Prizes are needed for the Chinese auction. Call Perry at 570-295-2078 or the clubhouse at 570-769-7287 to donate prizes for the Chinese auction.
CORNHOLE LEAGUE
Howard Fire Company started up their Cornhole league on Jan. 7. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for registration and bags fly at 7 p.m. Bring your teammate and have a team name picked. The cost is $10 per person each week. Bags are provided or you can bring your own. Games are recorded and tracked during the season using Scoreholio.
Cornhole will be each Tuesday evening for several weeks. Call 814-625-2761 for info.
LIONS NEWS
Howard Area Lions Food Bank distribution will be on Monday, Jan. 20, from noon to 3 p.m. for residents that live in Beech Creek Borough and Beech Creek Township and those residents of Centre County who missed their distribution date earlier this month. Bring your sturdy boxes back each month for future distributions.
Howard Area Lions Bingo is held on the second and fourth Thursday evenings of the month through May. The next Bingo will be on Jan. 23. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and Bingo starts at 6:30 p.m. Lions Bingo is held at the Beech Creek Fire Company social hall building.
Milesburg Lions Club holds their Bingo every Thursday evening at the Milesburg Community Center. Doors open at 5 p.m. and games begin at 6:45 p.m.
Howard Area Lions will hold their monthly business meeting on Jan. 21. All Lions are asked to attend the meeting as this will be an important one with many topics of discussion and decisions to be made. The meeting will be held at the Yearick Center in Howard and begins at 6:30 p.m.
Howard Area Lions has added a few new names to their membership roll. Curt and Donna Benner, Bonnie Lilyquist, Brenda Shaw and Kathy Stem were recently sworn into club members. This brings the total members of the club to 97 now. Men and women of all ages are eligible to become Lions members. See any club member for an application today!
