UPMC Susquehanna recognizes extraordinary nurses

UPMC DAISY GROUP

WILLIAMSPORT– Six UPMC Susquehanna nurses were recently recognized as recipients of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

∫ John Fox, RN, Intensive Care Unit at UPMC Williamsport Regional Medical Center, was nominated by a fellow nurse. The nurse wrote, “John was caring for a patient in the ICU while the patient’s wife was receiving care in another unit at the hospital. As it was Valentine’s Day, the couple was sad to not be able to spend time together, but luckily John was able to coordinate a visit between them, so they could spend the holiday together. This is just one example of many in which he’s gone above and beyond for his patients.”

∫ Christopher Winn, RN, Emergency Department at UPMC Susquehanna Muncy, was nominated by a patient’s wife. “My husband was in great pain but didn’t want to let it show. Chris was able to put him at ease by connecting with him through humor,” said the patient’s wife. “Chris shared a story from when he was younger in which he ended up with an injury like my husband’s and the they shared other scar stories like two old friends. The next day, Chris called our home to check on my husband and I which really impressed us both. It’s great to know that we have such great care providers right here in our community.”

∫ Shelby Swartzlander, RN, Surgery Center at UPMC Williamsport Regional Medical Center, was nominated by a patient’s mother. The mother wrote, “My young daughter was in to have her tonsils removed. When she woke up from surgery, she was very upset. Shelby took the time to sit with our family and help soothe my daughter as much as she could. Even though the unit was busy, Shelby made us feel like we were the only patients there. She is an exceptional nurse and we’re so thankful to have been in her care that day.”

∫ Scott Perry, RN, Emergency Department at UPMC Susquehanna Soldiers + Sailors, was nominated by a fellow nurse. “A patient’s family member mentioned to me how much they appreciated the kind, compassionate care that Scott provided to their loved one, as well as how he made sure to keep the family informed on the patient’s condition,” said the nurse. “This was one of many encounters I’ve had with patients and family members who share their praise for Scott. He is an exceptional nurse and he deserves to be recognized.”

∫ Sheila Lain, LPN, Behavioral Health at UPMC Williamsport Regional Medical Center, Divine Providence Campus, was nominated by a fellow nurse. The nurse wrote, “As a nurse it’s in our nature to care for others, not just our patients. On one occasion, I was having a particularly rough day and Sheila took the time to sit and talk with me. Just having her listen helped me get to a better place so that I could be in the proper state of mind to provide care to my patients. Shelia is very supportive of her co-workers and is a valuable member of our team. We’re lucky to have her.”

∫ Diana Nyman, RN, Emergency Department at UPMC Susquehanna Lock Haven, was nominated the daughter of two patients. “My parents have received care multiple times at the hospital and we had developed a relationship with Diana,” said the daughter. “Whenever she was working, and they were in her care, we knew my parents were in good hands. Sadly, my parents have passed, but I will forever be grateful for the care provided, and empathy and compassion that Diana showed to us all. She is a very special person and a great nurse.”

UPMC Susquehanna nurses are honored as DAISY Award winners every quarter. Anyone can nominate a nurse for the award including co-workers, patients, patient’s family members, or physicians. Nomination forms are available at nursing stations and at UPMCSusquehanna.org/DAISY.
