McELHATTAN — Restless Oaks opened in 1984 as a small family-owned restaurant and remains the same today.

Originally it was a small diner, serving daily homemade soups, hand pressed burgers, and a large selection of baked pies.

Restless Oaks has been a labor of love, ever-expanding and aided by its community’s handy members.

In 1986 the dining room was added with a huge fireplace. The masonry work was done by the Jacobs family from Castanea. Etchings created by hand are featured around the windows, and Craig Brady was commissioned for wood carvings all around the restaurant.

The late Frank Swinehart created a model Piper airplane that hangs from the ceiling. The PA Room was added in 1991, providing a space for large family gatherings of up to 36 people.

In the restaurant’s original room there is the famous “Liars Table”. Every day at lunch time you can find a ragtag group there, composed largely of members of the Maguire family. Often you will find them singing and playing the guitar and harmonica, with multiple generations chiming in. A visit to Restless Oaks has always been, and will always be, about family.

And the family is very thankful for the dedicated employees that that work with them to make the restaurant special.

After a hearty meal, patrons can visit the gift shop and find handcrafted goods made by local artisans and books written about beautiful Central Pennsylvania.

On their way out, lining the boardwalk, are wood carvings by Jeff Donoughe, and Amish-made swings, all for sale.
