UPMC buys former outlet mall for $5M

SPENCER McCOY/THE EXPRESS The former Bald Eagle Factory Outlet is seen yesterday afternoon near McElhattan. UPMC Susquehanna has purchased the 21-acre property, which is likely to become a new medical facility.

McELHATTAN — UPMC Susquehanna has purchased the former Bald Eagle Factory Outlet site in Wayne Township for $5 million. And word has been circulating through the community that a new medical facility will be constructed on the 21-acre site near the McElhattan exit of Route 220.

An official at UPMC Susquehanna said Wednesday afternoon that a formal announcement on the purchase in McElhattan would be forthcoming.

The Express had not received that announcement by press time last night.

A deed recorded last Friday at the Clinton County Courthouse listed the purchaser as “The Williamsport Hospital,” now UPMC Susquehanna, the seller as “Bald Eagle Enterprises, in care of Trisha Gibbons-Marty” of Williamsport, and the selling price of $5 million.

On Oct. 18, 2016, Susquehanna Health announced it had joined UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center), becoming UPMC Susquehanna.

Earlier this month, on June 7, UPMC Susquehanna announced it had signed an Asset Purchase Agreement to acquire the 47-bed Lock Haven Hospital, along with the 70-bed Sunbury Community Hospital.

On June 20, Cole Memorial Hospital in Coudersport signed a letter of intent to integrate into the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center network with UPMC Susquehanna.

The Wayne Township site opened as an outlet shopping mall in June of 1993, with dozens of brand-name outlet stores.

Seven years later, the stores moved out. Since then, the mall has housed numerous other commercial and service agencies, including the PennDOT driver’s license center, a child day care facility, and a telemarketing business. The majority of the mall has remained empty.
