Hometown Heroes

LOCK HAVEN — Just in time for Veterans Day, Downtown Lock Haven Inc. board members and volunteers will conduct a special “phone-a-thon” from Lock Haven University’s East Campus this coming week to kick off sales for the 2019 Hometown Hero Banner Program.

The event will run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., with volunteers calling past and present banner sponsors to see if they’d like to renew the display of their banners for another two years, or re-hang their banners from past campaigns.

“We’re making sure everyone’s aware the Hometown Heroes is kicking off,” Downtown Manager Kasey Campbell said.

The event will be broadcasted live on Downtown Lock Haven Inc.’s Facebook page as well, Campbell said.

The cost to have a banner rehung is $50. Interested individuals ban bring in the banner used previously, she said.

If anyone is interested in having their banner reprinted, the cost is $100.

A new banner cost $200.

Beyond banner costs, all proceeds go to sustain the nonprofit Downtown Lock Haven Inc., which works to help attract new businesses, works with existing business, organizes downtown promotions, parades and special ceremonies.

Banners may honor military veterans, active duty military personnel, and emergency first responders.

Since 2008, some 2,000 Hometown Hero banners have adorned the lightposts along the streets of Lock Haven and on the RiverWalk on the levee.

Many communities across Pennsylvania and the nation have copied Downtown Lock Haven’s program.

The next cyle of banners will be hung next August, but will also include new incentives and features.

Those who wish, can have a biography on their hero featured on Downtown Lock Haven’s new APP, links for which are found online at www.lockhaven.org.

Moreover, Downtown Lock Haven Inc. has partnered with Addie’s Awards to offer unique gift options, perfect for the holiday season, Campbell said.

“Addie’s Awards will be offering those who have previously purchased a banner custom Christmas ornaments, plaques, clocks and mugs,” she explained.

Those who wish to purchase one of the custom items must bring a photo of their hero or heroes to the Downtown office, Campbell said.

Some photos that Downtown Lock Haven Inc. previously had from the earliest years of the program have been lost due to an inadvertent error so a photo of a hero must be brought into the office, she said.

Once a copy of the photo has been made it will be sent to Addie’s Awards along with information about the hero that would typically be placed on a banner, she said.

Addie’s Awards will offer the customized products throughout the holiday season, although there will be a cut off date for those wishing to receive their gift before Christmas, she said.

Campbell said a ceremony to officially unveil the next round of banners is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019.

Downtown Lock haven’s office is located at 205 E. Main St. in downtown. The office number is 570-748-1576.

Meanwhile, the agency will help host a Sip and Dip event at Potter’s Palette, 106 E. Main Street., this coming Thursday, Nov. 15.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend. Wine and snacks will be provided and tickets can be purchased at Downtown Lock Haven Inc. by either dropping off a check at the office or calling 570-748-1576.

No experience is preferred and the theme will be guide post signs.
