Democrats pick Friedenberg for special election

Marc Friedenberg

From staff reports

The Pennsylvania Democratic Party has nominated Marc Friedenberg as the Democratic Party’s candidate for the special election in the 12th Congressional District which will be held on May 21, the same day as the Primary Election.

Republicans have not announced who their nomination will be to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Tom Marino.

State Party Chairwoman Nancy Patton Mills released the following statement:

“We are proud to nominate Marc Friedenberg to replace Tom Marino in the 12th Congressional District. Marc ran a great campaign against a deeply-entrenched incumbent in 2018, and we are confident that he will take his experience from last year and translate it into success this year. Republicans should not take this seat for granted. PA-12 deserves a congressman like Marc, who will fight the opioid epidemic and defend working Pennsylvanians. Like we did with Conor Lamb, we are going to fight for every vote in every district and ensure that Marc will be victorious on May 21st.”

Marc is an assistant teaching professor at Penn State, where he teaches cybersecurity and cyberlaw courses. He’s a Columbia Law School and Penn State graduate. In his legal practice, he represented investors who had been defrauded by the Wall Street banks which had knowingly allowed the housing bubble to grow before the financial crisis in 2008.

He was born in northeast Philadelphia, graduated from Council Rock High School in Bucks County, and now lives with his wife and two young daughters in State College.

The Pennsylvania Democratic Party, in conjunction with the 15 county Democratic Committees that make up the 12th Congressional District, issued a call for candidate applications.

As Friedenberg was the only candidate to apply, the county parties forwent a nominating convention and recommended him to the Party’s Executive Committee outright. The Pennsylvania Democratic Party Executive Committee then voted to officially nominate Friedenberg as our candidate.

The Pennsylvania Democratic Executive Committee is comprised of one state committee member per state senate district (50 members), the officers of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, and the members of the Democratic National Committee from Pennsylvania.
