MILL HALL –The last day of school in the Keystone Central School District won’t be as bad as many originally believed.

At Thursday night’s work session, the school board looked at revisions to the 2018-19 calendar, and the last day of school is now tentatively set for Friday, June 7. It had been set for Tuesday, June 11.

“We looked at a couple of different options with the calendar,” said KCSD superintendent Jacquelyn Martin. “What we came up with is a solution I believe is a win-win for our families, for our staff and the district as a whole.”

With the final day of school set for June 7, Bucktail High School graduation will be held on Thursday, June 6. Central Mountain High School graduation will be on Friday, June 7.

At its voting session in February the board had approved the last day of school as Tuesday, June 11. However, Martin and her staff worked to revise the calendar and make things more amenable to students.

Friday, May 24 was scheduled as an Act 80 Day, but it is now a regular student day.

“We have enough hours in our school day now completed that we could use Act 80 Days in place of two student days,” Martin said.

Teachers will have in-service days on June 10 and 14, with Act 80 Days on June 11, 12 and 13.

“Our students will be out sooner and out of those hot buildings that don’t have climate control. It allows us to work on option plans and get ready for the next school year,” Martin said.

“It’s a great solution to something that was starting to look like it could become problematic for us,” said board president Boise “Bo” Miller. “I know nobody wants to be here in the days in June when it gets to be 100 degrees … it’s not conducive to learning to be here that late. It’s a solution that’s worth considering.”

The board will vote on the revised calendar at its voting session at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 14 at the Central Mountain High School auditorium.
