WILLIAMSPORT – President Donald Trump is coming to Central Pennsylvania to support a Republican candidate for Congress.

Trump’s visit will be on behalf of 12th Congressional District candidate Fred Keller, who is running against Democrat Marc Friedenberg.

The president is scheduled to speak at about 7 p.m. Monday, May 20, at the Williamsport Regional Airport in Montoursville after Air Force One lands there.

Keller and Friedenberg will square off in a special election the next day, May 21, to fill the vacant 12th Congressional seat formerly held by Republican Tom Marino.

“I’m excited to welcome President Trump for his first visit to the 12th District during his Administration and to highlight the work he is doing on behalf of every Pennsylvania family,” Keller said.

“President Trump’s leadership has led to more jobs, a stronger military, increased care for our veterans and a booming economy. I look forward to helping the President keep these accomplishments going and fight for every Pennsylvanian in Congress.”

Williamsport Mayor Gabriel J. Campana, a long-time Trump supporter, said he is hopeful about speaking with Trump during his visit, particularly about the city levee situation and flooding issues.

“I’d like to see a comprenhensive plan,” Campana said.

Campana, a Republican candidate for Lycoming County commissioner, said he met Trump previously during a visit to the White House with other mayors across the nation.

“I am hoping to meet with him as an elected official,” he added.

Marino said, “It’s good to see him (Trump) come to Pennsylvania. We want to keep that seat.”

He said Pennsylvania could also prove to be an important state for Trump in the 2020 presidential election.

Others are not so happy about Trump’s visit.

Friedenberg said Trump’s economic policies are failing farmers and American consumers.

“As I have traveled around the district, I hear about pocketbook issues more than any other: the need for good paying jobs, the high cost of health care, better education for children and protecting Social Security,” he said.

“The fact that Fred Keller is appearing with President Trump in support of President Trump’s Tariff War, only signals how out of touch he is with the residents of the district and his inability to challenge his party’s leadership.”

Gates will open at 4 p.m., according to Lycoming County Republican Committee Chairman Joe Hamm.

Final details are still being worked out, he said.
