Karibu Arts honored by First Lady of PA

LOCK HAVEN — Deborah Kincaid founder of Karibu Arts, Inc., in Lock Haven, recently met with Gov. Tom Wolf’s wife, Frances Wolf, at State Correctional Institution Muncy to learn more about Karibu programs.

Karibu Arts is a rehabilitation center where art workshops are offered at no charge to justice-involved women and youth.

Kincaid’s volunteer work in Clinton County includes work at the Clinton County Correctional Facility, Clinton County Children and Youth and SCI Muncy

“Each week I meet with female detainees for a two-hour art therapy workshop. Issues of substance abuse and recovery are addressed through the art therapy process,” Kincaid said.

“With CYS, weekly art therapy workshops are offered to youth ages 21 and under. “In Muncy, Reverend Debra Reitz sponsors me under ‘chaplain services’ and I meet with female detainees once a week for a Spiritual Art Therapy workshop.

At the request of the First Lady of Pa., Frances Wolf, I met her at SCI Muncy on June 20. Mrs. Wolf expressed interested in experiencing an art therapy workshop. In attendance with Mrs. Wolf was Jennifer Wilburne, senior correspondence specialist in the office of Gov. Tom Wolf, and Megan Healey Augustine, executive director. Six women presented their art work to Mrs. Wolf, Ms. Wilburne, and Mrs. Healey-Augustine.”

Kincaid received a letter of thanks from the First Lady, which she shared with Express staff.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks and appreciation for joining us at SCI Muncy on Thursday, June 20. The rehabilitative work you do is vital in the transition to life outside the system,” Wolf wrote. “The Wolf Administration is dedicated to supporting ex-offenders in the ongoing process of rebuilding their lives after prison. Programs such as yours provide invaluable support to women and their families, advance the great cultural heritage of Pennsylvania, and build our creative legacy for the future. Your work offers not only a creative outlet for inmates, but also a safe space to grow and learn emotionally.

“As First Lady, I am always impressed and humbled by the dedication shown by leaders like you,” Wolf continued. “I greatly appreciate your thoughtfulness and generosity, as well as all you do to help move Pennsylvania forward. Thank you again for joining me at SCI Muncy and please accept my best wishes for further success in the future.”
