Haven Place residents celebrate 100th birthday

LOCK HAVEN — There’s been some sadness at Haven Place these days as the coronavirus has virtually cut off visitation to residents there and limited groups of five or 10 in a program.

But two residents found something to smile about in spite of not being able to celebrate their 100th birthdays with family and friends.

The recreation department of Haven Place planned on having a big 100th birthday party for Louise Powers and Margee Boone, and they were determined not to let this milestone go unnoticed for the two women.

And so they downsized, with a cake saying 100 and fun birthday hats for the birthday girls. A small group from the recreation department did the honors and wished the women a happy birthday.

Louise, of Lock Haven, was born March 13, 1920 and has always been a healthy person. She has lived at Haven Place for five years. She grew up with three brothers, one step-brother, one sister and one-step-sister. She has three daughters, eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Asked what has changed over 100 years, she responded, “Everything you can think of. I didn’t have electricity back in my day.”

She attributes her long life to being a good mother, good grandmother and good person.

Louise, who received almost 100 birthday cards from friends and family, enjoys bingo, reading books, magazines and the newspaper, watching television and visiting with friends and family.

Margee Boone was born March 19, 1920 and hails from Windber, Pa. She’s a healthy person and says she can eat everything and anything but never gains a pound.

Margee was the oldest of three sisters and the mother of a son, Matthew.

Talking about 100 years, Margee said people today are more outspoken and less considerate than they were years ago. A former school teacher, she attributes her long life to loving her job and her students… and “minding my own business.”

She enjoys visits from her granddaughter, watching game shows, the news, westerns and soap operas on television and doing crossword puzzles and word searches.
