Lyco gets state funding for election process

WILLIAMSPORT — Lycoming County commissioners approved state funding for election modernization and security and took action on other business during its meeting Tuesday.

The $542,531 grant will enhance the election process this November in a year when the public is faced with COVID-19 and the use of absentee ballots has dramatically increased.

“We want people to have faith in the election process,” Lycoming County Voter Services Director Forest Lehman said.

He said the big challenge this election year is to ensure all procedures and guidelines are followed.

On a related note, he noted that two polling places have changed for this election

Lycoming Township residents who normally cast ballots at the municipal building will now vote at Fairlawn Community Church. In Williamsport’s Eighth Ward, residents will vote at St. Paul United Methodist Church instead of the Bridge Club.

In other action, commissioners approved an agreement with SEDA-Council of Governments to provide administration for a portion of the COVID-19 County Relief Block Grant, which is not to exceed $179,050.

The agreement covers fiscal management, procurement and other needs.

Commissioners approved an agreement with the state for the Title IV-D Child Support Enforcement Program. The agreement outlines needed resources, operating expenses, duties to carry out the program as well as other guidelines. The existing agreement expires in September.

Commissioners approved the purchase of an industrial shredder from JTF Business Systems for $20,220 for elimination of old records and documents.

Also approved were cooling units from Green Machine for $41,343 for the county recycling center.

Commissioners are expected to act at their Thursday meeting on an agreement with Pennsylvania College of Technology for a new sign at the White Deer Golf Course.

Existing signage, commissioners noted, is old and in need of replacement.

The sign will welcome visitors to the golf course as well as the college’s Earth Sciences Center located at the complex.
