Unemployment claims decrease in Clinton County

LOCK HAVEN –The Clinton County unemployment situation showed some improvement during the week ending August 1, according to the state Bureau of Labor & Industry.

The continued unemployment insurance claims for the county were 1,492, down from the 1,606 listed in the week ending July 25. The high number during the pandemic was 3,219, registered in early May. Of the 1,492 continued claims, 53% were female, 23% were 25 to 34 years old, and 20% were in the accommodations and food services.

The initial unemployment claims remained at 68 people, the same as the week before. That number included 67% who were male, 26% in the ages 25 to 34, and 28% in construction. The high initial claim number since mid-March was 1,050, achieved in early April.

Clinton County’s June unemployment rate was 10.9%, translating into about 1,900 unemployed. That number is about 1,000 above the pre-COVID timeframe. The July monthly rates should be released by the state in late this month.
