Howard Happenings

Liberty Baptist Church in Blanchard has a supply of Terry Lynn nuts and candy left yet. Most of the nuts or candies are sold in one pound bags and range in price from $6-$10.

If you are interested in purchasing these items that would make great Christmas gifts you should contact Joyce at 570-962-3355.

Tickets for the Gun Drawing at Walker Township Fire Company are on sale now.

The gun drawing was planned for Sept. 12 and the tickets have that date printed on them, but since the event had to be postponed until the spring you should keep your ticket as it will be honored for the new date. The new event date will be announced in plenty of time for you to attend. Tickets are $10 each and are available from any fire company member.

The Howard Area Lions Club will again be assisting the Salvation Army this year for their kettle collection and bell ringing at Walmart on November 27. Give a wave and a smile to our Lions men as you drop your donations into the kettles today.

Howard Area Lions Food Bank distribution dates for December will be on December 7 and December 21. Food bank drive-thru hours are from noon to 3 p.m. You should stay in your car and wear a mask. Bring your empty boxes back for the workers to reuse each month.

This month if you are not getting Toys for Tots thru the Lions Food Bank you may come on December 7 for your food bank items. If you are getting toys then you will need to come on December 21 because this is the only day that the toys will be handed out.

Because of the COVID-19 restrictions you will need to complete the necessary paperwork to collect the toys on December 21 and then you will need to wait until the toys are brought to you. You are to be sure to wear a mask and stand back or return to your vehicle until your toys are brought out.

Do not come for toys or food until noon because coming early will not speed the process up. The Lions Club workers will be giving out the food and toys from noon until 3 p.m. so you’ll have plenty of time to be assisted without coming earlier.

I don’t think the toys are wrapped this year because of the pandemic so you may want to leave the kiddos at home so they don’t get a sneak peek at what might be under the tree for them.

For questions or to learn more about who is eligible for food or toys thru the Howard Area Lions Club you should contact Food Bank Chairman Ron Davy at 570-962-2407.

Lions members who still have Lions Lottery Calendars for the 2021 year should turn in your sold calendars and try to finish up selling those unsold calendars before January 1. The calendars are just $10 each. This is a fundraiser that the Lions Club uses to help those in need in our local community. If you would like to purchase a calendar you can ask about them at the December food bank distributions.

We need to get more blood donors involved with the Howard Blood Drives that are co-sponsored by the Lions Club and the fire company. Please mark your calendar to become a blood donor at the next drive that will be held on December 9 at the Howard fire hall. Blood drive hours are from 1:30 to 7 p.m. Our local Lions club will even provide transportation to and from the blood drives for those who need a ride. Call Lion Paul at 570-660-0265 for transportation info.

The Lions Club is looking for a volunteer who can plow snow at the food bank headquarters this winter. If you have the equipment and would be willing to do the work please contact Ron Davy at 570-962-2407.

The Monument Festival Committee regretfully must cancel the Christmas Tree Lighting in December because of the pandemic gathering restrictions. Anyone having any questions about the activities that are held in Monument may contact Roger or Mona at 570-962-2443.

The descendants of Wilson and Hazel Miller of Marsh Creek usually gather for their Miller Christmas Party each year on the first Saturday evening of December. This year the party was to be held on December 5 at the Marsh Creek Brotherhood Park at 6 p.m. but is being cancelled because of the pandemic. Please pass the word of the cancellation to other family members. Contact can be made to John and Deborah Mansell at 814-364-9132.

The descendants will gather for their annual reunion on May 29, 2021 at Milesburg Community Park.

Howard Parks and Recreation is sponsoring a Happy “Howardays” Christmas Decorating Contest and wants Howard residents and businesses to participate in the first annual contest. Contestants can get creative using lights, 12-foot inflatables or whatever you can find to decorate your home or business for the holiday season. First and Second place winners will be voted on by the community.

The contest will run until Sunday, December 13, and you must enter the contest by submitting your name and home address by emailing to howardparksandrec@gmail.com. Your house will not be eligible if you haven’t registered to enter the contest using this website and your decorating must be done by December 13 to be considered. This will give the committee time to have the community see the decorations and then be able to cast their votes.

On Saturday, December 19, the winners will be announced. Bundle up and come to Veteran’s Park (next to the post office) between 6-7 p.m. to cast your ballot for the best winners. Please practice social distancing and wear a mask when coming to vote. Treats and beverages will be served to those who come out to cast their ballots for the most favorite Happy Howardays home or business. Everyone is welcome to participate in the voting.

Brother’s Pizza and the Kitchen Witch Cafe in Howard have been generous to offer the prizes for the contest winners.

Anyone with questions about the contest should contact Anita Masden at 814-571-4160.
