Twin storms to dump snow, ice on Clinton, Centre

LOCK HAVEN — Winter hasn’t lost its punch just yet.

This week is shaping up as a doozy, weather-wise. Things will start to get tricky today, according to AccuWeather senior meteorologist Tom Kines.

“We have a couple of storms to watch this week,” Kines said. “There’s one (today) and then one later in the week, around Thursday. It’s hard to say which one is going to be worse right now. We’ll have to keep an eye on both of them.”

First things first: Today’s storm. According to Kines, the snow will likely start “around lunchtime” today and continue into the evening.

“Right now, we’re looking at around six inches of snow,” Kines said of this winter storm. “It really depends how the storm tracks.”

Kines said that the snow will change over to sleet and freezing rain in the evening and that could affect overall snowfall amounts.

“If the sleet and freezing rain starts earlier, we could get more sleet and less snow. It’s wait-and-see … but it’s definitely a messy picture,” Kines said.

Today’s high will top out at 29, with the low tonight dipping to 23. AccuWeather RealFeel temperatures will be in the lower 20s and high teens today.

Kines said there will be two to three inches on the ground by the time evening rolls around. It will make travel this evening difficult, Kines said.

“It’s going to be a rough (evening) commute,” he said.

Kines said that the precipitation will end early Tuesday. He said that much of Tuesday will be “precipitation-free.”

Tuesday’s high will be 31. The low Tuesday night will be a frigid 4. If you are going outside Tuesday night, you should limit your time outdoors and bundle up. Frostbite can occur to exposed skin within 15 minutes.

According to Kines, Wednesday will be a “dry day.” Under partly cloudy skies, the high will be 28; low will be 18.

Snow is back in the picture on Thursday. Again, Kines said, it could be a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain.

“It’s going to be another weather event,” he said. “It’s definitely something to watch.”

Kines said that nailing down snowfall totals will have to wait for later in the week.
