Cass and the Bailout Crew nominated for CPA Music Award
LOCK HAVEN — One local band is moving up.
Cass and the Bailout Crew has been nominated for Best Rock Band for The Central PA Music Awards, also known as the “Local Grammy’s.”
The band, who formed in Summer 2019, has quickly developed a fan base throughout Pennsylvania, and beyond.
Lead singer of the band and Lock Haven native, Cassey Chatham is accompanied by Mike Steppe, singer and guitarist; Nick Laylon, bassist; and Mike Wrench, drummer.
They formed as a band in 2019 after Chatham appeared as an actress in a music video for Boom Town Boys, another area band that Steppe, Laylon and Wrench are in together.
It was then that the band realized that Chatham was also able to sing, and could potentially be what they had been looking for.
“Mike was searching for a female for his music video. He had no idea that I sang at all. And he just kind of put it out there. I’ve always been so afraid of it. So, the fact that I get out and do all of these things is really crazy,” Chatham said.
It was not long after that Cass and the Bailout crew began.
The band recently released their first album in May of 2021, “Room to Breathe” with 10 original songs.
“We started as a cover band. Essentially, we have our one album that has 10 songs on it. They are our originals. But we also do a lot of covers from the 50s to now, and they range from country to rock to pop to R&B, country. We like to put our own twist on things for sure,” Chatham said.
The band currently has a diverse setlist of cover songs that are available on their website. Some of the songs include “Somebody To Love” by Jefferson Airplane, “Love On The Brain” by Rihanna, “Jolene” by Dolly Parton, “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” by Pat Benetar, “Bobby Mcghee” by Janis Joplin, “Dangerous Woman” by Ariana Grande and many more.
“We do “Somebody to Love” by Jefferson Airplane and then we kind of go into “White Rabbit.” And that’s one of my favorite things to do around here. People react really well when we do Bobby McGee,” Chatham said.
During their performances, Cass and the Bailout Crew perform a variety of covers, as well as their originals — And their fans enjoy it all.
“It’s fun when we have good responses for our originals too. That’s a good feeling. Going out and playing a song that they have no idea what it is. And then they react well to it,” said Chatham.
Cass and The Bailout Crew have an active Facebook page, where they post upcoming events and updates.
“Room to Breathe” is available on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Pandora and many other platforms as well.
