Frigid air moves in to area

LOCK HAVEN — Last weekend, it was the snow. This weekend, it’s the cold.

Temperatures in Centre and Clinton counties are expected to dip this weekend to the single digits — and below. According to Accuweather meteorologist Jordan Root, temperatures are going to be dangerously cold over the weekend.

“It’s looking like a very, very cold weekend,” Root said. “Some of our coldest temperatures since 2019. We’ve got a nice snowpack on the ground, which makes things even colder.”

The low Friday night was expected to be below zero at (minus) -2. On Saturday, the high is expected to get to 23 under partly sunny skies. The low Saturday night will be 15.

“That will be warm this weekend,” Root said with a laugh.

On Sunday, there could be some snowflakes flying around. The temperature on Sunday will reach 28, but will plummet as the day goes along. The low Sunday night will be 4.

“We don’t see much wind in the forecast, so that’s good,” Root said.

Next week doesn’t look much better, though, according to Root. Tuesday is the lone day in the 30s. Single-digit temperatures are expected as lows each night next week.

“It’s a cold snap of arctic air,” Root said, “and it will be here for awhile.”

The good news? It doesn’t look like there is any significant snowfall in the forecast. The best days for precipitation are Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday, but it will be minimal.

As for the cold, Root says that if you can avoid it, do so.

“If you can stay inside, do that. If you have to go out, wear layers and bundle up,” Root said.

Frostbite can occur within in minutes, so avoid having skin exposed in frigid temperatures. Bring pets inside as well.
