Fire started in shed causes damage to Lock Haven duplex

A late-night fire engulfed a duplex at 723 and 725 East Main St. in Lock Haven. The fire caused significant damage to the property, but did not result in a total loss, officials said. CHASE BOTTORF/THE EXPRESS

LOCK HAVEN — The back portion of a Lock Haven home was engulfed with flames on Thursday night.

Fire crews were called to a two and a half story duplex at 723 and 725 East Main Street, not far from Piper Airport, at about 7:46 p.m. Crews remained onsite for abou three hours battling the blaze before clearing the scene at 11:09 p.m.

According to the Hand-in-Hand Fire Company captain, Jacob Neff, the structure fire started in the shed behind the building and proceeded to spread to the rear porch. Once the porch was enflamed, the fire spread into apartment 725 of the building, he added. The cause of the fire that engulfted the back portion of the building is currently undetermined. Significant damage was caused to 725 and there was moderate damage to 723.

Damages caused to the duplex was estimated to cost about $80,000, according to Lock Haven Fire Chief Bob Neff.

The residents of 725 — two adults, three children and a dog — safely got out in time. The fire did not result in a total loss, said Neff, adding that the structure will be able to be repaired in the future. The worst the family lost were some personal belongings.

There was no clear sign if the residents had insurance or not, according to Jacob Neff.

Lock Haven Fire Department, Dunnstown Fire Company, Castanea Fire Department, Avis Fire Company, Flemington Fire Company, Citizen’s Larrys Creek Fire Company, Flemington EMS and Lock Haven EMS responded to the fire and assisted on the scene.
