It’s baking contest time

Clinton County Fair Baking Contests, Monday Aug. 1

MACKEYVILLE — Clinton County Fair officials are reminding all amateur bakers that its almost time for the fair and that includes the ever popular baking contests. Contest will be held on Monday Aug. 1.

Registration is from 7 a.m.-9 a.m. Judging times have changed, Apple Pie & Angel Food judging will be at 9:30, and Jr Baking & Chocolate Cake contest judging will be 10 a.m.

The contest is sponsored by the PA State Association of County Fairs, which has been in existence since 1912 with over 100 member fairs, associations and societies holding annual events that showcase the state’s top industries-agriculture and tourism.

JUNIOR BAKING CONTEST

(Cookies, Brownies, Bars)

This contest is no longer limited to chocolate cookies, brownies, or bars, but it’s open for any flavor.

The goal of the Junior Baking Contest is to encourage young people to participate in fairs by showcasing products produced and grown in the state.

A contest participant must be 8-18 years of age and a resident of Pennsylvania.

Cookies, brownies and bars must include two PA preferred ingredients. A list of those ingredients is available at PAPreferred.com

Pa. Fairs offer cash prizes for the Pa. preferred cookies, brownies or bars in the Junior Baking Contest, Clinton County Fair premiums are — 1st place: $20; 2nd place: $15 and 3rd place: $10.

The Clinton County Fair is a preliminary competition that leads to the selection of the final PA Preferred Junior Baking Contest cookies, brownies or bars blue ribbon winner that can participate at the PA Farm Show in Harrisburg in January, and the 1st place winner at the Farm Show will be awarded a cash grand prize of $500 for winning the PA Preferred cookie, brownie, or bar recipe.

HOMEMADE CHOCOLATE CAKE

A contest participant must be an individual amateur baker and a resident of PA. Entrants may NOT have won 1st place in the Homemade Chocolate Cake Contest in any other fair in 2021. The entry must be a layered chocolate cake made from scratch. The entry must be frosted and the frosting must also be made from scratch. The cake must feature chocolate or cocoa as a main ingredient. (Cake should be in/on a disposable container)

Judging Criteria

Flavor, Texture, Inside/Outside Characteristics, Frosting

The recipe for the cake and frosting must be submitted with entry on a 8×11 piece of paper, entrant’s name, address, and phone number must be printed on the back side of recipe. All recipe’s become property of the fair or the PA Farm Show, and will not be returned.

Pa Fairs offer cash prizes for the best Homemade Chocolate Cake, Clinton County Fair premiums are: 1st place-$25; 2nd place-$20; and 3rd place-$15.

Clinton County Fair’s contest is a preliminary competition that leads to the selection of the final Homemade Chocolate Cake blue ribbon winner, that can participate at the PA Farm Show each January. The first place winner at the PA farm will be awarded $500.

BLUE RIBBON APPLE PIE

CONTEST

Open to any individual who is a Pa resident. The Entrants may NOT have won first place in Blue Ribbon Apple Pie contest at any other fair in 2021.

Pie must include at least 60% apples in the filling, it doesn’t need to be a traditional two crusted apple pie and can have a variety of fillings. The pie must be submitted for judging in a disposable pie pan.

Judging Criteria

Flavor, Filling, Crust, Overall Appearance, and Creativity

The recipe for the pie and crust must be submitted on an 8×11 piece of paper, entrants name, address, and phone number must be printed on the back side of recipe. All recipe’s become property of the fair or PA Farm Show and will not be returned.

Premiums for the Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest at Clinton County Fair: 1st place-$50, 2nd place-$25, 3rd place-$15 and 4th place $10.

The Clinton County contest is a preliminary competition that leads to selection of the final Blue Ribbon Apple Pie winner that can participate at the PA Farm Show in January. The winner of the Blue Ribbon Apple Pie at the Pa. Farm Show will receive $500.

INCREDIBLE ANGEL FOOD

CONTEST

The Angel Food Cake contest is sponsored by the PA Egg Farmers and PA State Association of County Fairs.

There are two types of cakes, butter and foam(egg-leavened). Angel food is the class example of a foam cake. The cake is 100% fat free and because of the eggs, is a good source of the highest quality protein, as well as a source of choline, which is essential ot memory and brain development.

Entrants may NOT have won a 1st place in this Angel Food Cake contest in any other fair in 2021.

All cakes must be made from scratch and using eggs produced in Pa. The recipe must be submitted with the cake on a 8 x 11 piece of paper, with name, address, and phone number printed on the back. The recipe becomes property of the fair or PA Farm Show. (The cake should be in/or on a disposable container).

Judging Criteria

Flavor, Inside/Outside Characteristics, Overall Appearance, Creativity, Topping, Icing or Decorations

The Clinton County contest is a preliminary competition that leads to selection of the 1st place winner to be eligible to participate at the PA Farm Show in Harrisburg in January.

NOTE: Refrigeration is not available at the fair or PA Farm show. Entries that require refrigeration after baking must indicate so in the recipe. Those entries will not be sold, auctioned or otherwise distributed for consumption after judging for food safety reasons.
