McELHATTAN — On Oct. 21, prior to the Wayne Township Supervisors’ Meeting, Jerry Powers was recognized by the supervisors, recreation committee members and his family for his many years of service to the Wayne Township community.
Officials surprised Powers with a beautiful bench and recognition plaque, to be placed near the bench, in appreciation for his volunteerism and commitment throughout the years.
Powers has been a resident of Wayne Township for 56 years and is well known throughout the area. During his 13 years on the recreation committee, Powers has served as committee chair as well as a member. He spent numerous hours picking rocks and clearing brush for walking trails at the Wayne Township Nature Park.
When the idea for a ballfield became reality, he was often seen in the early morning hours and throughout the day doing the necessary tasks to get the work done.
His favorite activities with the recreation committee include Halloween and Christmas events. Powers is still going strong and, to many, is an excellent example of an unsung hero.
Another pastime Powers enjoys is woodworking. In addition to his beautiful personal creations, he has crafted many of the props used during holiday events at the nature park.
It’s people like Powers who make a difference.
“The recreation committee has made a positive impact on the township,” according to Wayne Township Supervisor, James Maguire. “People come here to enjoy our parks and offerings. Thank you for all you’ve done over the years.”
