JS man dies in Rauchtown crash
RAUCHTOWN — A Jersey Shore man was killed early Thursday morning in a single-vehicle crash in the 2800 block of Rauchtown Road, Nippenose Valley Fire Chief Dean Miller confirmed.
The accident occurred at 5:40 a.m., less than two miles from the Clinton-Lycoming county line.
The male victim, driving an SUV, was traveling south on Rauchtown Road when he lost control of the vehicle, Miller said. Conditions were very slippery, he added.
“The road was snow covered, but ice was packed down underneath the snow as a result of it storming overnight,” Miller said.
The driver, whose identity was expected to be released after family members were notified, was wearing a seat belt, Miller said, adding that the man had already succumbed to his injuries when first responders arrived on the scene.
It appeared that the SUV first struck an embankment and flipped on its passenger side before crashing head-on into a tree, Miller said.
Besides Nippenose Valley, Jersey Shore firefighters also responded to the crash and assisted in removing the man from the wreckage.
A Clinton County deputy coroner pronounced the driver dead at the scene, Miller said.
State police at the Lamar barracks were leading the investigation.
