Proposed CTE course presented to JS board
JERSEY SHORE — A proposed new half-credit one semester course in the high school’s Business Education Department was introduced by David Bittner, director of career and technical education (CTE) in the district. Bittner presented information about the course to members of the school board at their meeting this week.
The course, “Business Communications,” will be a required course for all students in the business CTE programs, including those in the entrepreneurship, accounting technology and marketing programs.
According to the course description, it would focus on “improving student career readiness skills for written and verbal communication as they relate to the field of business. Students will create professional documents including emails and memos as well as presentations such as briefings and speeches. Connections with the local business community and Chamber of Commerce will be established to support student learning in this area.”
The primary resource for the course, Bittner said, would be Business University, an online platform that the business educators are proposing will serve as a primary resource for all of the business courses.
“So, while there’s no direct cost associated with offering this course, this new course will use the same business education platform that we’re proposing to purchase to support all of the business education classes at the high school,” Bittner said.
The course will be advertised as part of the scope and sequence of courses so that any student coming into the entrepreneurship program would see that in grade 11 they’re going to take business communications that year, Bittner added.
