Students advance in FFA Creed

LOGANTON — Three Sugar Valley Rural Charter School students are advancing to regionals for reciting the FFA Creed.

Harper Tressler, Halen Martin and Brandon Galentine competed in area creed — with Tressler taking first and Martin and Galentine placing second in their respective sections.

“I actually wasn’t interested in getting involved with the creed, but Harper kept talking about it… I thought I might as well do it — I started later than she did, but I practiced with her,” said Martin.

“We practiced every single day multiple times,” said Tressler.

After the competition, judges give the students as a whole basic information about areas that need improvement, rather than individual feedback.

“They’ll be ready. They’re good. In a week’s time you always see a huge change in them. I think we’re going to do good at regionals. It’s tough,” said Advisor Chuck Bechdel.

The students will be reciting the creed during the FFA Awards Banquet at Sugar Valley this April.

Regionals will take place a few days later, allowing the students plenty of time to prepare.

“We have a tough region,” said Bechdel.

They’re hoping to do well at regionals, and are striving for greatness.

The girls also spoke about how they helped out with FFA week, which took place from Feb. 18 to 21.

Throughout the week there were many activities planned for the students and staff at SVRCS.

Students went over to the elementary classes and, if the students participated in spirit week, they gave out prizes — stickers, erasers, pencils and bracelets.

Students participated in animal day where elementary students could attend and pet or see the animals belonging to FFA members.

The FFA chapter also butchered pigs, hosted the FFA Carnival and dyed their hands for Greenhand day. They also handed out donuts to the staff members.

Dying your hand green is an initiation for “greenhands” or first year chapter FFA members.

Starting at $3.69/week.
