KC board talks Liberty Curtin; Hears update on construction
MILL HALL — The Keystone Central School Board received another brief update about the ongoing Liberty Curtin Elementary School construction project during its committee reports at a recent work session.
Board Member Jeff Johnston, who chairs the Facilities Committee, said that Jeff Straub, from Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Assoc. — the firm overseeing the project — provided an update during its meeting in February.
Johnston said Straub’s presentation laid out the project so far, noting construction was about 72 percent complete and the budget was near 80 percent complete.
“The building shell is nearly finished with interior finishes almost complete — major components like windows, drywall, ceilings, flooding are nearing completion,” Johnston said.
The only hiccup that the project has dealt with so far, Johnston said, involved the electrical switchgear. Straub noted in the presentation this is a common occurrence.
“The electrical contractors found a way to use a temporary switchgear in there until the actual one arrives, hopefully sometime soon,” Johnston told the board.
Plumbing within the structure is 80 percent complete, he said.
Final touches on the building will begin on March 25.
“Demolition of the existing building will happen in mid-June and building occupancy will be phased in from May through August with, hopefully, a handover sometime in the July-August timeframe,” Johnston continued.
Straub is expected to provide another update to the Facilities Committee in May.
The board will consider one item related to the construction project during its voting session this week, regarding the installation of a marquee sign at the building’s entrance.
“There’s a marquee put in place near the road with an electrical component,” Johnston said during the committee updates. “It’s a digital, electronic sign. It will say Liberty Curtin Elementary and be programmable.”
Quotes the district received were between $19,000 and $34,000 for just the electronic portion of the signs.
Johnston noted the contractor handling the masonry for the elementary school building has donated the labor and materials to create the stonework around the sign.
“They’ll donate the materials and labor which is very nice and will save us quite a bit of money,” he said.
The committee put forward, for consideration, the approval of accepting a bid from Signs Plus for the marquee at a cost of $19,990.
During the board’s discussion, Board Member Chris Scaff noted the Sugar Valley Fire Company was able to have a sign of similar dimensions installed at its building for about $6,000.
“It’s a very reputable company and a lot of fire companies use it. Our Amish members did the brick work and everything but the sign was different,” Scaff said. “They can sit in the fire company on a wireless laptop keyboard and punch (information) all in.”
Superintendent Dr. Francis Redmon asked Scaff to forward the information regarding the sign to him so the administration could try and obtain a quote for consideration. Scaff agreed to do so.
The board will consider the marquee sign during its voting session on Thursday night. Due to a scheduled executive session — regarding a legal matter — the board’s meeting will not start until 7 p.m. The meeting will be held in the administration building, 86 Administration Drive, Mill Hall.
