BLANCHARD — Students, staff, faculty and guests gathered on Monday in the Liberty-Curtin gymnasium to honor veterans, alongside their family and friends.

Dr. Lana Weaver, one of Liberty-Curtin’s fourth grade teachers, with the help of faculty, set up a Veteran’s Day assembly where students were able to present certificates to their family members and family friends that have served, including grandparents, aunts, uncles, parents and more.

The veterans, 27 in total, lined up outside the gym doors before walking in to a round of applause from the crowd as principal Brett Umbenhouer began the assembly with an introduction of the veterans.

“Each name represents the story of courage, sacrifice and love for our nation, and we are proud to have them here today,” said Umbenhouer. “Veterans Day is the time to pause and reflect on the freedoms that we enjoy and the people who have made those freedoms possible. The men and women we honor today answered the call of service, knowing that their service often requires personal sacrifice. They have left behind their families, their homes and their daily routines to defend something bigger than themselves; the safety and freedom of others.”

Before passing the podium over to Weaver, Umbenhouer left guests with a final thought, “Here at Liberty-Curtin Elementary, we live by the saying “one team, one dream.” It reminds us that when we work together, support one another and move forward with a shared purpose, we can achieve great things. That same spirit is reflected in our veterans. One team that stood united to defend our nation, and one dream of defending that for you.”

After the introduction from Umbenhouer, Weaver took to the podium, sharing how America will be celebrating its 250th birthday in 2026, “We are aware that this milestone would not be possible without veterans such as yourself who protect and continue to serve our country.”

Students and guests then rose to join in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Star Spangled Banner.

After the audience was seated, Weaver invited the fourth graders from her class and Ms. Smith’s class to sing God Bless the USA to the veterans.

Before the certificates were handed out, Weaver expressed, “Today’s program is more than a ceremony, it is a reminder of gratitude, unity and the power of service to all of our veterans on behalf of our entire school community.”

Along with the certificate, each veteran was introduced with their branch of service, years served and conflict involved.

Many of the veterans saw conflict during the Cold War and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Students who had family or friends come for the assembly were lined up in the middle of the bleachers to easily stand up and take the certificate to their veteran.

The kids ran up to each of them with smiles, to hand the certificate and pass on a hug as they thanked them for their service.

The assembly ended with the playing of Taps before breakfast was served.

Veterans and their families were invited to the media center to enjoy a breakfast spread of casseroles, eggs, baked goods and drinks.

Along with the breakfast, Albright Studio Photography was there to take individual photos of each veteran with their students to commemorate the special moment.
