Centre makes donation to local shelter

BELLEFONTE — After Centre County PAWS took in 43 dogs from an apparent animal hoarding situation last month, the Centre County Board of Commissioners approved a $1,000 donation to help offset expenses incurred by the county’s largest animal shelter.

PAWS Executive Director Lisa Bahr, who attended this week’s voting meeting, said six dogs surrendered to County Humane Officer Mark Resnak on March 20 were brought to their facility. After forensic veterinary exams, a search warrant was obtained for the owner’s property where more dogs were believed to be living, she said.

“He had never been inside the home but was told by many that it was a problem and there were many other dogs,” Bahr said.

The following Friday, 37 more dogs were brought to the shelter after they were seized by Resnak and his team. Because the case is the focus of an ongoing criminal investigation, additional details, including the identity of their former owner, remain limited.

“I am very proud of our team that all 43 of those dogs went to foster homes,” Bahr said.

She said PAWS appreciates the recognition of its work and the county’s investment in a humane officer.

“(We) really appreciate that the position of humane officer was created — thanks in very large part to your efforts,” Bahr said. “Without that, this wouldn’t have been possible… It’s a great use of our funds.”

The commissioners thanked the organization for being a partner to the county.

“Thank you so much to your organization, your many volunteers, the generous citizens of Centre County, who I believe have donated a few thousand dollars to help with the significant costs of caring for 43 dogs,” Higgins said.

Commissioner Concepcion said the partnership has strengthened local animal welfare efforts.

“PAWS has been a tremendous partner in providing a place for our humane officer to bring animals to be cared for, given veterinary checks and very frequently placed with folks in the community who are able to take care of them,” she said.

Starting at $3.69/week.
