At the parks

The following events will take place at area state parks. Per CDC guidelines, participants in these programs are asked to wear a mask when attending.

Registrations for any of these events will be taken by calling 570-753-6005, or by going to DCNR’s calendar of events.

LITTLE PINE STATE PARK

— Little Pine State Park will have programs on “Atlatls” on Saturday, June 27, at 2:30 and at 4:30 p.m. Join the park staff as they educate you on a weapon that pre-dates the bow and arrow. The Atlatls was once one of the most widely distributed tools during ancient times and is still widely used today. Join us for this introductory lesson to learn atlatl history, basic techniques and safety. After a short discussion, participants will have the opportunity to use the Atlatls and take part in a fun competition to see who is the most accurate. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The programs will be registration only, and may be canceled in the event of severe weather. Meet at the contact station.

— Little Pine State Park is having a program called “Flight of the Bats” at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 27. This program will be focusing on some of the bats’ adaptations, some myths about bats, and a fungus that is threatening their population. There will also be a bat count, weather permitting. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. This program will be registration only, and may be canceled in the event of severe weather. Please make sure to register in a group if more than one person is coming. Meet at the amphitheater.

— On Sunday, June 28 at 10 a.m. and at 1:30 p.m., join the naturalist for a program about the “Terrific Turtles” at Little Pine State Park. Some of the topics that will be covered include different turtles that are found in Pennsylvania, their adaptations, and their diet. This program will also have a craft. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The programs will be registration only, and may be canceled in the event of severe weather. Meet at the beach.

HYNER RUN STATE PARK

— Hyner Run State Park is offering three “Terrific Turtles” programs at 3:30, 5 and 6:30 p.m. on Friday, June 26. Join the park naturalist to dive into the world of turtles. Some of the topics that will be covered include different turtles that are found in Pennsylvania, their adaptations, and their diet. This program will also have a craft. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. These programs will be registration only, and may be canceled in the event of severe weather. Meet at Pavilion No. 1.

— On Friday, June 26 at 8:30 p.m., join the naturalist for a program called “Flight of the Bats” at Hyner Run State Park. This program will focus on topics such as bats’ adaptations, different kinds of bats, some myths about them, and learning about something that is threatening their population. A movie will also be shown. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. This program will be registration only, and may be canceled in the event of severe weather. Meet at the amphitheater.
