Police: Man shot, killed by trooper during cabin standoff

JIM THORPE, Pa. (AP) — State police say a man was shot and killed by a state trooper during an armed standoff at a cabin in the Pocono Mountains in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Police in Pike County say 31-year-old Nicholas Cantelmi barricaded himself in the Porter Township cabin Wednesday after fleeing a traffic stop that morning in which they say he intentionally struck a police vehicle. The Jim Thorpe resident was wanted on a parole violation in another county.

Police said in a news release that negotiators tried for seven hours to persuade him to surrender, and they also used tear gas and flash-bang devices to try to get him to come out. Police said Cantelmi fired shots from inside the cabin before he was shot and killed Wednesday night. Police and county prosecutors are investigating.
