Bellefonte police target pedestrian law violations

BELLEFONTE — To help facilitate and promote a safer environment for citizens to walk and drive within the borough, the Bellefonte Police Department will be targeting pedestrian law violations within the most heavily traveled areas in town. This initiative began Monday and continues indefinitely.

For numerous and well documented reasons, Bellefonte is well-known for its unique old town charm. This coupled with being the County Seat and home to numerous well established businesses, it is safe to say that pedestrian traffic is higher than normal for a town of its size, police said in a prepared release.

To add to the high volume of foot traffic in town, there are several state routes that run through the middle of town. These trafficways are at their busiest with vehicle traffic nearly at the same time that the sidewalks are busy with pedestrian traffic, police said.

With the COVID 19 pandemic there has been a noticeable uptick in foot traffic thrughout the entire borough, more folks seem to be walking than driving modest distances.

It is the intent of this pedestrian safety initiative to help establish a more pedestrian friendly environment, police said. The police will be distributing pedestrian law informtion and safety tips via their web site and personal contacts on the street.

The Bellefonte Police Department will also target specific areas within town seeking violations for pedestrians and motorists. On traffic stops, education materials and tip sheets will be given out.
