LHU celebrates 150 years with events and activities all year long
LOCK HAVEN — Lock Haven University is celebrating its sesquicentennial this year, with a number of planned events and activities to extend the festivities through the end of the year.
Last fall, LHU held a Sprit Day for students, faculty and staff to gear up for the 2020 anniversary year celebration. Rogers Gymnasium, the oldest building on campus, was the location. There was food, giveaways and historical memorabilia on display.
Recently, LHU kicked off the year’s festivities with a 150th Birthday Celebration on Friday, Feb. 14, in honor of the day the institution received its Charter – February 14, 1870, as the Central State Normal School. Tables were set up in Bentley Dining Hall and Rogers Gymnasium, where students, faculty and staff could pick up some LHU 150th branded giveaways, create valentines, get their picture taken with LHU’s mascot, Talon the Bald Eagle or record a video saying why they love The Haven.
In Rogers, there was music, a free throw contest with prizes for the winning student and faculty or staff member, free cupcakes and popcorn, LHU history was on display and PSECU set up a table with giveaways and games. LHU President, Robert Pignatello also led the singing of “Happy Birthday LHU.”
Free throw contest winners were Cam McCole, a freshman business major and John Vitale, Assistant Director of Alumni Communications. They each received a 150th celebration swag bag filled with LHU prizes and a $150 gift certificate to the LHU Store.
The celebration will continue throughout the year with Haven Summer Fest on June 27, homecoming events on Oct. 2-4 and a Bald Eagle Ball in December.
Ongoing activities include the Haven coloring contest, which includes an entry for all ages and a 12 and under entry. Entries are due by Oct. 9 and the winner will be announced in the winter 2021 special anniversary edition of The Haven Magazine.
Submit a Haven story – students, faculty, staff and alumni are encouraged to submit a written or video story or memory about their time at The Haven.
Take “Traveling Talon” with you on your travels this year. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members are all encouraged to print out a paper Talon or buy a plush Talon at the LHU Store to take with you wherever you go. On vacation, a road trip, to an amusement park, out to eat or just in your back yard. Take a picture with Talon and post it to social media with the hashtag, #TravelingTalon and tag the university @LockHavenUniv to see where Talon ends up.
Follow LHU on social media – Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and Snapchat – to keep up with the sesquicentennial activities and events. Check out some LHU history on Facebook and Instagram every Friday with #150Friday posts.
