Drawing closer to God

Rev. John Snyder

James 4:8a says, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”

This Bible verse is an invitation for us all to initiate a closer step to God’s heart and direction. As we pray, read, or meditate on the Bible, God will reveal Himself to us. These steps will help us to discover who He is. It is important that we have an intimate relationship and time with God so that we can understand His purpose for our lives and learn to hear His voice. As we spend time with Him and draw near to Him, He will give us direction and wisdom.

God has made a way for us to come to know Him. He has made a way for us to grow spiritually and to have a better understanding of Him. We need to take the initiative. We need to put ourselves in a position where we are able to hear all that He has to say to us. When He speaks to us or reveals Himself to us, we need to respond. Putting His words into action delights Him. It puts us in a position to receive guidance from Him and blessings.

James 4:8 is an incredible promise to us. God says if we come to Him, He will respond to us. If we get closer to Him, He will get closer to us. He will manifest His presence on our behalf. He is waiting for us to activate this promise.

John 14:21 TPT reminds us, “Those who truly love me are those who obey my commands. Whoever passionately loves me will be passionately loved by my Father. And I will passionately love you in return and will manifest my life within you.” And Psalms 73:28 says, “But it is good for me to draw near to God; I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all Your works.”

Let us not wait any longer to draw closer to God. He is lovingly and patiently waiting for us to come to Him. We need to take the necessary steps to have a deeper encounter with God. When we focus our hearts towards God’s heart, we are in the position to hear and know His voice. The wisdom and understanding of God will lead and safely guide our pathways in life. Let us continue to believe that as we do our part, God will always do His part. He never fails to fulfill His promises. Our drawing near to God unlocks the wonderful benefits of having a relationship with Him.

Stay encouraged by this promise from Proverbs 3:5-6 TPT:

“Trust in the Lord completely, and do not rely on your own opinions.

With all your heart rely on Him to guide you, and He will lead you in every decision you make.

Become intimate with Him in whatever you do, and He will lead you wherever you go.”
