LOCK HAVEN — The Lock Haven City Beach is likely to remain closed for the rest of the year.

A high level of E. coli, a species of fecal coliform bacteria, has been found in the water, and everyone is warned not to swim in the river. The state Department of Environmental Protection is undertaking a 30-day testing period of the river which may help pinpoint a problem source.

The city samples the water each week as a matter of routine. Once a high level of E. coli was found on June 13 City Recreation Director Jack Bailey closed the beach, as required.

Since then he has taken daily samples of the water and driven them to a lab in Williamsport to go through the 22-hour test process. On Thursday, the river was clear, and Bailey was optimistic.

But the results are in now, and the numbers are not good, he said.
