City updates closure hours for Main and Grove streets Friday into Saturday
LOCK HAVEN – Sections of Main and Grove streets will close at 3 p.m. each Friday and reopen at 9 p.m. on Saturdays until Sept. 26, according to City Manager Gregory Wilson.
The change comes after Wilson, Director of Community Life Kasey Campbell and city staff fielded questions and heard feedback from city business owners and residents following the first street closures on Friday, June 12 into Saturday, June 13.
The closures included a section of Main Street from Jay to Vesper and Grove Street from East Church Street to Jordans Alley closed to allow businesses to utilize their front sidewalk for outdoor seating and sidewalk sales. The street closed at 10 a.m. June 12 and reopened at 9 p.m. on Saturday June 13.
Although much of the feedback was positive, there were some issues brought forward leading to the time change.
“We certainly didn’t think this would be perfect from the start. We don’t pretend to know the perfect way to do this,” Wilson said to council on Monday night.
Wilson and Mayor Joel Long encouraged anyone who may have ideas to make the closures better to contact city hall. But to do so in a kind way.
“This is how we go about this. We’re not trying to be dictators. Come to us, talk to us in a respectful manner,” he said. “But don’t abuse the employees.”
Long said the city would not tolerate disrespect to city employees who are attempting to field comments after some residents treated staff in an abusive manner while expressing their frustration with the closure according to Wilson.
Still, Wilson and city staff want continued public engagement to make sure the closures benefit as many residents and businesses as possible.
“If people do have ideas on how to make it better that would be great to bring to Kasey,” Wilson said.
“I think it’s a smart idea to be ever evolving with this,” Councilman William “Bill” Mincer commented.
The closures of Main and Grove are expected to continue every Friday and Saturday until Sept. 26. Beginning June 28, the annual Lock Haven City Summer Concert Series will take place on the Main Street stage every Friday night at 6 p.m. for residents to enjoy live music while exploring the downtown.
