Jan Schwarz Bennett
Jan Schwarz Bennett, 84, of Valrico, FL, formerly of Lock Haven, passed away Sept. 12, 2020.
A fourth generation Pennsylvanian, born in Lock Haven on May, 31,1936, he was preceded in death by his father, Harry Cerine Bennett, Jr. and mother, Edna Mae Schwarz Bennett.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Martha Futch Bennett; daughter, Tamara Sue Metzler and son-in-law, Michael Paul Metzler, Denton, TX; two grandchildren, Erika Metzler (Sean) Holland, Oklahoma City, OK and Brett Joseph Metzler, Denton, TX, who will be ordained as a Catholic Priest in May 2021.
He was a 1954 graduate of Lock Haven High School, a 1961 graduate of University of Tennessee with a B.S. Degree and 1967 graduate of University of Mississippi with a M.Ed Degree (Eng. Lit.).
Jan was a head high school basketball coach for 33 years in various Florida high schools, an assistant coach at University of Mississippi for two years, head coach at West Georgia College for four years, and assistant coach for both men and women’s basketball programs at the University of South Florida, Tampa. He won the George M. Steinbrenner Coach of the Year award in 1994 and was inducted into the Florida High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 2012.
Memorial services will be held 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, 2020, at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church, 604 N. Valrico Rd., Valrico Fl.33594. A Celebration of Life reception will follow the service at the Loyal Order of Moose, Valrico.
