Happenings from the Heisey

Happy New Year to everyone and wishing everyone a great 2019.

We’re looking forward to an exciting and busy year, beginning with the Feb. 10 free Second Sunday Program, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Poorman Gallery, open to all, showcasing our collection and Clinton County History: “Valentines, Hankies and Fans.”

Vintage Valentines and fans, and their secret meanings, plus the nationally recognized collection of hankies and mercantile memorabilia will be on display. Hope to see you!

The Heisey will reopen to the public on Jan. 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Thank you to Diana Howell, Susan Daniels, Loretta Coltrane and Beth Brobst for sending memorials for Bobbie Way, and to Josephine Smith for a memorial for Henry Mellinger.

Thank you to our valuable 2019 business supporters. Look for our decal in their windows showing their support of CCHS and be sure to thank and support them as well: APC Inc., Avery Dennison, C. Watkins & Associates, Berkebile Real Estate, The Bus Stops Here, Lugg & Lugg Attorneys, Woolrich Inc., First Quality Products, Woodlands Bank, Snowiss, Steinberg & Faulkner Attorneys, Susquehanna Transit, First Citizens Community Bank, LMR Tires, Lykens Market, Coploff, Ryan, Welch & Houser Attorneys , Partnership B & Band, Yost-Gedon Funeral Home, and Pine Mountain Dental. It’s not too late to become a business sponsor. We feature each logo on our Facebook page on a rotating basis, maintain a list in the Poorman Gallery and Heisey Museum, and contain a listing and thank you on our website.

We received a beautiful letter from the daughter of Irene Grenoble Campbell, relating stories of growing up in Pine Creek (or “Crik” as she used to say), which she had read at her mother’s Celebration of Life service.

Irene’s memories of family, farming and friends, high school, the war years, and living in Lock Haven when life was more simple and less complicated, gave a historical insight to life here in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. Irene Campbell had been a CCHS member for many years. We have many members who grew up here, moved away, established a life and career many miles away, but support the Historical Society in its mission to preserve and share the history of their birthplace. We thank them.

Next month’s update will give more information about our annual meeting on March 24. We’ll have a program and elect board members.

Tickets for Wine in the Wilds are already on sale on our website www.clintonpahistory.org. Save the date of April 27 at the Clinton Fairgrounds. This is such a fun event, and grows each year.

From the Collection:

An examination of the deeds at the Heisey yields some interesting information.

There are several deeds signed by Jerry Church and his brother Willard from the 1830s. Notices of tax sales go back to the 1790s when the amount owed was listed in shillings and pence. Tax sales in the 1800s were often for a debt of less than $10. Deeds in the 1800s often included a section that the owner’s wife had to sign stating that she was aware of and approved the sale of the property.

A lease drawn up by John G. Farrandsworth on April 1, 1882, had very specific conditions: $20 for the year to be paid in quarterly installments, 3 tickets to each entertainment at the Opera House, and 6 tickets to each circus that came to Lock Haven. Perhaps this was one of the first April Fools’ Day jokes.
